Teaching Resources

The Department of Medicine is equipped with comprehensive basic science laboratories, covering eight core disciplines: biology, general chemistry, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, pathology, and parasitology. In addition, the department offers six small-group discussion rooms, a gross anatomy laboratory, and a specimen display room, supporting both foundational learning and interactive discussion.

Mackay Memorial Hospital has invested NTD 3 billion in the construction of a new medical building at the Tamsui branch, featuring purpose-designed consultation rooms and multiple discussion spaces to support problem-based learning (PBL). This department plans for audiology students in their junior year to observe at Mackay Memorial Hospital. The observation areas include the otolaryngology outpatient clinic, balance/dizziness examination room, and audiology examination room. The observation goal is to enable students to understand the hospital’s routine and clinical audiologist’s work flow, familiarize themselves with the theory and operation methods of various audiological assessment tools, and lay the necessary practical operation ability for clinical internships in their senior year.

2. Speech Sound Discrimination and Visual Reading

This course focuses on the perceptual and cognitive foundations of speech and language processing, guiding students to develop skills in speech sound discrimination and visual reading (lip-reading). Through structured practice, audiovisual materials, and guided exercises, students learn to identify, analyze, and differentiate speech sounds, as well as to integrate visual cues to enhance speech comprehension, particularly in individuals with hearing impairment.

The Department of Optometry is the only optometry program in the country directly affiliated with a medical school system. The Program is dedicated to cultivating advanced professionals in audiology and speech-language clinical services, education, and leadership. To support the development of these competencies, the curriculum is structured into three integrated components:

For students who do not yet hold a Nurse Practitioner (NP) license or formal NP training certificate, it is recommended that they enroll in designated courses such as Health Problem Diagnosis and Treatment, Clinical Evidence-Based Care, and Special Topics in Nurse Practitioner Internship. The Department of Medicine at Mackay Medical University (hereinafter referred to as the Department) has long upheld its educational mission of “Continuing the Mackay spirit and cultivating good doctors of tomorrow.” Over the years, the Department has nurtured numerous outstanding physicians, earning high recognition from both the medical community and society.

With ongoing changes in population structure and disease patterns, future physicians will face increasingly complex challenges. They must be capable of mastering advanced medical knowledge and emerging technologies, while demonstrating clinical excellence, adaptability, and innovation within diverse and rapidly evolving healthcare environments.

As Taiwan enters a super-aging society, the medical field has placed growing emphasis on areas such as aging medicine, regenerative medicine, precision medicine, cardiovascular and preventive medicine, chronic disease management, immunology and cancer medicine, as well as neurological and psychiatric medicine. These developments highlight the critical role of the Department in cultivating advanced clinical talents in these key medical domains.
