Introduction

National Chung Hsing University (NCHU), founded in 1919, is a research-oriented comprehensive national university. Its academic fields are complete, with the Colleges of Liberal Arts, Management, Law and Political Science, Science, Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Life Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Medicine, the Research Institute for Circular Economy, and the International College of Innovation and Industry. The 11 colleges are concentrated on the main campus in the center of Taichung City (Taiwan’s second largest city, an important transportation hub between north and south). The Research Institute for Circular Economy is located on the Nantou campus (Zhongxing New Village, Nantou City). Both campuses are easily accessible, have a comfortable climate, and offer good living conditions.

NCHU excels in research areas such as agricultural science, agricultural economics, veterinary medicine, life sciences, translational medicine, materials science, biomedical engineering, biotechnology, and green technology. In 2022, in response to the global trend of sustainable development, it established the first Research Institute for Circular Economy in Asia, focusing on three key areas: new agriculture, smart technology, and green semiconductors, further expanding its rich research fields.

Teaching quality and academic prestige

It demonstrates excellent performance in 10 fields: Agricultural Science, Plant and Animal Science, Chemistry, Engineering, Materials Science, Biology and Biochemistry, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Environment and Ecology, and General Social Sciences, ranking in the top 1% globally in Essential Science Indicators (ESI).

We have established departments (programs) taught entirely in English, promoted English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI), accelerated the bilingualization of the university, improved students’ English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, and assisted students in obtaining internationally and corporately recognized English proficiency certifications to facilitate future career planning and development.

Together with National Cheng Kung University, National Sun Yat-sen University, and National Chung Cheng University, we form the “Taiwan Comprehensive University System” alliance. We also form the “Taiwan National University System” alliance with National Chi Nan University and 14 other national universities. Through academic exchanges, inter-university course selection, mutual recognition of credits, and sharing of library resources, we increase students’ opportunities for interdisciplinary learning, integrate the resources of member schools to jointly establish research centers, implement social responsibility, develop internationalization, create interdisciplinary synergies, and enhance the competitiveness of the university.

International Exchange and Cooperation

We promote an internationalized campus, signing sister school cooperation agreements with over 350 major universities abroad, exchanging students, and signing transnational dual degree programs with internationally renowned universities in the United States, France, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and other countries to enhance students’ international perspective and competitiveness.

境外生輔導機制

The Student Safety Guidance Office assists overseas Chinese and Hong Kong and Macao students with admission procedures, accommodation arrangements, health insurance, and organizes seminars to help students adapt to campus life as soon as possible. There are also scholarships and grants available exclusively for overseas Chinese and Hong Kong and Macao students.

Students form the “Overseas Chinese Students Association,” which includes the Malaysian Student Association, the Hong Kong and Macao Student Association, the Indonesian Student Association, the Myanmar Student Association, and the Global Student Association. Through various academic, cultural, sports, and recreational activities, they build consensus among students from different regions and experience a sense of home.

Highlights

We offer “Interdisciplinary Credit Programs” and “Interdisciplinary Second Specialty Programs” to help students develop a second specialty.

The “Interdisciplinary Credit Program” is designed to broaden students’ learning fields and cultivate their ability to integrate disciplines to facilitate their further studies or employment. We offer interdisciplinary credit programs for bachelor’s and graduate students to choose from according to their interests. The “Interdisciplinary Second Specialty Program” is designed to encourage students to learn independently, provide more flexibility in course selection and interdisciplinary learning opportunities, and assist students in developing a second specialty. Currently, 9 departments offer interdisciplinary second specialty programs for students to choose from.

“Xingshuxue Corporate Mentors” guide students to explore new career possibilities.

The “Xingshuxue Corporate Mentors” course is composed of 7 benchmark companies – SPIL, Bank SinoPac, YS Biopharma, Ve Wong Corporation, Taiwan Cement Corporation, ASML Taiwan, and Yulon Nissan – forming an “Enabler Alliance” to allow students to come into contact with different fields of industry. Through the guidance of corporate executives, students can explore their careers in advance and create more possibilities.

The course content includes visits, industry trends, and career counseling, allowing students to understand the talents needed in various industries and to learn across fields in addition to their original fields, which is of great help to students entering the industry in the future.

“Xingchuang Base” is a place to inspire and realize entrepreneurial dreams.

“Xingchuang Base” is a field for teachers and students to incubate new ventures, a brand for business counseling and innovation and entrepreneurship, and the first friendly school in Taiwan that can be registered as a company. With the core concept of inspiring students’ innovative thinking, we maintain cooperation with entrepreneurial courses (competition teams) in various colleges (institutes) so that teams can continue their entrepreneurial dreams after courses or competitions. On the teacher side, we actively explore original and commercially potential technology teams, and assist in applying for the Ministry of Science and Technology’s Scientific Research and Entrepreneurship Program, FITI Program, and the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Value Creation 2.0 Program to help original technologies move towards commercialization.

For various teams, we provide case-specific consulting clinics and training courses, assist them in establishing companies, match angel investment funds, and assist in linking external resources, extending into the back-end incubation center of our school, creating a complete one-stop path for innovation and entrepreneurship counseling, and creating an exclusive practice place for NCHU teachers and students to generate entrepreneurial ideas.
