Pathways
Indonesian/2017/Chen Mingyi/Department of Digital Media Design
The time I spent in the Department of Digital Media Design at Ming Chuan University was really great! I not only learned a lot of design skills, but also enjoyed the rich food culture of Taiwan. When I was hungry, there were food paradises nearby, and I could always find a super satisfying restaurant. Moreover, even if I was hungry in the middle of the night, I didn’t have to worry at all. Taiwan’s convenience stores are really convenient, providing all kinds of ready-made hot food, cold drinks, and all kinds of fried food at night, which always satisfies my midnight snack needs. But these delicacies are also one of the reasons for my weight gain, but facing so many delicious foods, I really can’t control myself sometimes! In college, I majored in web design and also learned some programming languages. This knowledge laid a solid foundation for my future career. After graduation, I was lucky enough to find a job as a UI designer and joined a large company. This job not only allowed me to use the knowledge I learned in college, but also provided more rich practical experience. Special thanks to the teachers of Ming Chuan University. It is their patient guidance and inspiration that allows me to do so much now. This valuable learning experience not only helped a lot in the professional field, but also guided the direction of my life.
Indonesia/2023/Lin Shiling/Department of Tourism Management
I am an international student from Indonesia. I am a freshman at Ming Chuan University. I have been studying in Taiwan for more than three months. These three months have given me many things that I have not experienced in my life. I have learned many new words that I have never learned before in daily life, and even some idioms that I have never heard of. I feel very lucky to be able to study at a university in Taiwan, because I can meet many friends from different countries and experience a way of life that I have never experienced in Indonesia. I also learned about some Taiwanese culture. Another thing I didn’t expect was that I was able to get a scholarship. The meaning of scholarships may be different for each student. The meaning of scholarships to me is the driving force for my learning. With scholarships, I work harder and cherish learning opportunities more, because I also come from a very ordinary family, and scholarships are very important to me. With scholarships, the financial burden on my parents is reduced. During this period in Taiwan, I also participated in many internships, which added to my life experience, and this experience will definitely be beneficial to my future. By participating in the internship class, I learned many things that I had never learned before, increased new knowledge, and for me, this is also a way to recognize my interests. In my university life, I handle and solve everything myself, from small things to big things. Although my mother sometimes gives me some advice, I make all the decisions myself. Whether it is things in life or things in school, I handle them myself. These experiences have helped me grow from a little girl who used to have her mother handle and decide everything to an independent person, from a person who didn’t dare to do many things to a person who bravely faces things herself. University life has brought great changes to my life. I must continue to move forward and not back down. For a better future, I must also become the pride of my parents.
Malaysia/2019 Wang Chia-Ching/Department of Hospitality Management
I am an international student from Malaysia, and my experience studying in the Department of Hospitality Management at Ming Chuan University in Taiwan is very rich. Because I come from a family with average economic conditions, and my younger siblings are all in school, as the eldest son, I need to bear the tuition and living expenses of studying abroad myself. Fortunately, there are many job opportunities in Taiwan to earn tuition. I found part-time jobs in restaurants and coffee shops, which not only helped me earn living expenses but also allowed me to learn many practical workplace skills. These job opportunities also gave me the opportunity to communicate with local people. I was able to better understand Taiwanese culture and customs, and at the same time enrich my practical experience and improve my professional skills. I think it’s great that the Overseas Community Affairs Council provides many rare exchange opportunities for foreign students and also provides various scholarships for us to apply for. I was fortunate enough to participate in many activities with people from different countries. This not only enhanced our friendship and allowed us to share the cultures and customs of our respective countries, but also allowed us to better understand the way of life of the Taiwanese people. In general, during my study abroad in Taiwan, I experienced a life that I would not have experienced in Malaysia, and at the same time broadened my horizons and insights, allowing me to have more tolerance and understanding of society. In addition to studying in Taiwan, I also have time to do what I like, experience and enjoy life. If I were to think back to what my mindset was when I set off, it was probably to embrace a fresh and challenging life that brings happiness, and to explore the different customs and colors of the world in a short life, and to feel the cultural charm of Taiwan with a richer and more diverse perspective.
Malaysia/2021/Hong Yongqing/Department of New Media and Communication Management
Studying in Taiwan has been my dream since I was 15 years old. Unknowingly, I have been studying here for 4 years. I came to a new city two months after graduating from middle school and started living. When I came here, I met a group of people from my hometown. They were very nice to me, so I didn’t feel lonely in this city. Studying in Taiwan has made me grow a lot because of my circle of friends and learning environment. It has also allowed me to accept every necessary process from confusion. I live in Taipei, and the pace of the city is not something I can imagine. I really like Taiwan’s transportation MRT. The scenery it passes through is very beautiful. Watching many people come and go, it’s like a TV series is being staged every day. In fact, I want to thank my family the most for supporting me to come to Taiwan and allowing me to be independent. All the experiences in life are hands-on.
Hong Kong/2020/Chow Ho Yin/Department of New Media and Communication Management
Time flies in Taiwan, and unknowingly it has been three years or even more. If you ask what life has been like in these three years? I think I will put these three years at the top of my life and tell myself all the time about the places I have been to, the people I have met and the things I have encountered during these years. The experiences of each student who comes to Taiwan to study are different. But I can be sure that life at Ming Chuan University has not disappointed me. The academic pressure in Taiwan is not high, so I have a lot of time to explore this treasure island. In addition to class time, I like to walk around, hoping to get a good understanding of the land under my feet in these few years. From north to south, from east to west, almost every city and town in Taiwan has been deeply imprinted in my mind. The communication between people has also become deeper because of the more relaxed pace of life. The students and teachers at the school, as well as the people I met by chance on the road. They are telling me all the time that the most beautiful scenery in Taiwan is people. As a human being, you are destined to walk your own path. This is mine, and I hope everyone can also walk a path that can be placed at the top of their lives.
Hong Kong/2017/Lau Kong Lung/Department of Applied English
After failing the DSE exam, I originally planned to just sign up for a skill at the Vocational Training Council in Hong Kong, but my family pushed me to sign up for a university in Taiwan. At first, I went with an indifferent attitude, thinking that there was nothing special, but after four years, I am very grateful that I went. I found that the academic pressure was much less than that of my friends studying at universities in Hong Kong, which gave me a lot of time to participate in different activities, such as participating in seminars, international student sports games, etc. I also obtained a driver’s license and completed a round-the-island trip in four years. These experiences should be difficult to achieve if I studied in Hong Kong, at least the threshold for achieving them would be much higher. Living alone abroad will also become more independent and autonomous. You have to do many things yourself, but the advantage is that Taiwan has good functions, so life is very convenient. Finally, Taiwanese people are also very friendly. After getting along with the students and teachers at the school, you will find that they are very warm and friendly. Even after graduation, we still keep in touch from time to time. Even now that I have returned to Hong Kong, I still miss the time I spent in Taiwan very much.
Hong Kong/2018/Shi Nuoran/Department of Applied English
I grew up in a greenhouse family, where family members would help solve any problems that arose. This gave me the idea to leave Hong Kong for further education and learn how to become independent. Taiwan was my first choice, not only because the tuition fees are more affordable than in Hong Kong, but also because the rent is much cheaper. In terms of learning, my Chinese was not very good at the beginning, but the teachers and classmates around me were very patient in listening to me speak or communicating with me in English. When my pronunciation was incorrect, they would correct me without the slightest impatience. In terms of living, I lived in the school dormitory for one academic year before renting an apartment outside. Because there are roommates to take care of each other when living in the school dormitory, I would recommend living in the school dormitory first. When you are ready to live independently, then rent an apartment outside. I have to rely on myself to solve all the big and small things in life, which greatly improves my ability to handle things.
Macau/2018/Liang Jia Ning/Department of Tourism
Liang Jia Ning, from Macau, started playing handball in junior high school, initially just for fun, but later grew to love it more and more. She excitedly said that she did not expect that when she came to Taiwan to study at university, Ming Chuan actually had a handball team, which continued her handball dream. She naturally joined the handball team in her freshman year, played handball for four years, and was able to win gold and silver, adding brilliance to her university life. Recalling the days of practice after class, she said that at the beginning of practice, there was laughter and jokes, and after practice, there was still laughter and play, but as the competition days got closer and closer, the practice time increased, and the intensity increased. After each practice, she was exhausted, and she realized that athletes would go through stages such as adjustment period, training period, and competition period with the competition. Entering the stage of training for the competition, it was hard work, and sports injuries were inevitable. However, the coach and players had the same goal, and they only wanted to win the championship and win glory for the school. Although they may not be able to win the championship every year, and sometimes they do not achieve the expected results, the players can encourage each other and look forward to fruitful results next time, and give full play to the team spirit. Liang Jia Ning’s most memorable memories at Ming Chuan are the years of playing ball at school, because she joined the team as a freshman. That year, she was inexplicably nervous when she played in the University Cup for the first time. Even though her partners comforted her to relax and play with a normal heart, the nervousness in her heart still lingered on the court, and she made mistakes again and again. However, under the leadership of the seniors who stabilized the morale of the army, the situation took a turn for the better, and she reversed the victory and won the first place. Talking about handball practice and competition, Liang Jia Ning’s eyebrows are full of smiles. She said that the team is like a big family, and the players are like family members, trusting and encouraging each other, which alleviates her homesickness from leaving her hometown. Coming to Taiwan Ming Chuan to complete 4 years of university life, pursuing knowledge and playing ball at the same time, is full of beautiful memories. After graduation, she will first stay in Taiwan to travel to every county and city, carefully savor the beauty of this land, and then confidently move towards the future.
